about

‘Monsoonal Runoff’ is, in part, a song about wanting to be on boat, to be at sea, and to dive into the ocean, perhaps never to return...

The track was inspired by a lot of nautical things. There’s a video game called ‘Abzû’, in which you play as a deep sea diver, exploring underwater environments ranging from open water and natural caverns to ancient ruins. It’s mesmerising - the closest some of us will ever get to actual coral reefs; to see the sorts of things Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his merry band of scuba divers have seen. It could also be a song about pirates, the folktales, and rumours heard in the pubs around the Merseyside docks.

There’s an excitement in the air, the tall ships sail into port, crowds of people gather about the jetties. It’s about the stuff in children’s books, too: the storms at sea, the treasure chests, the heartless captains, and the sea monsters!

Words by Ryan Murphy

lyrics

Looks like rain’s a warning,
Drifting down the coastal line.
The ship was cheered and the harbour cleared,
Sailing with the spirit inside.
And I’m sure I heard a Spaniard preaching,
Something from the page of rhyme,
But the meaning got lost in a six foot froth,
Captivated starboard side.

It feels like I’m dreaming,
Dreaming that I’m diving,
Diving for sunken treasure.

Like a hurricane, we had wandered.
Like a zig-zag over the sea,
Until we hit the tropics and my thoughts turned to focus on something under the reef
And the captain thought I was dreaming,
The captain had a dream in his eye.
There were feasts of gold in our wooden household
The night we made the precious dive!

It feels like I’m dreaming,
Dreaming that I’m diving,
Diving for sunken treasure.

It feels like I’m dreaming!
It feels like I’m dreaming!
